Research Tools Description
Flashlight
This is a "MUST" for any researcher. Make sure you always have it & that the batteries are fresh. You wouldn't want to get to the site after dark and find that you have to stumble around and possibly hurt yourself in the dark. I keep (3) flashlights in my inventory at all times. I personally prefer the MAG Light brand. This flashlight offers a heavy duty construction, high quality components and can also be utilized, if need be, as a means of self defense.
Million Candle Spotlight
This little item should be in everyone's tool box and they really aren't expensive or difficult to obtain. This piece of equipment will not only light your way during a dark investigation, but will also display to you if there are any airborne contaminations within your localized environment prior to taking a photograph. I picked up a couple of these lights thus far for $20.00 and they work great. Take great care in their use however, and don't point them at others, the light beam is very strong and can blind in an instant. Definitely get this item, it is well worth it the expenditure.
Digital Thermometer
This item will detect temperature and variations in temperature. You will be able to identify and prove the existence of cold or hot areas within the area you are researching. The type that utilizes laser advancement is my favorite type. This will give you the ability to obtain a reading from several feet away. The cost is approximately $100.00 for the laser sighting unit.
Duty Boxes
You will need these items to hold all of your research equipment. Make sure that you get one large enough to hold all of your research equipment.
Spare Batteries
These items are also a must. Make sure you carry at least (2) spare sets for each type of battery you use. A dead flashlight or recorder at the research site can become a real problem. Don't get caught up in this one. Keep lots of extras on hand.
Extra Tapes & Film
You will need to stock up on (60) and (90) minute audio cassette tapes. They aren't real expensive. I also recommend to purchase extra rolls of 400 & 800 exposure film. Try to purchase brand name film. This will keep the photo quality high. I also utilize 1600 / 3200 speed film. This can be special ordered from a camera or photo shop in your area.
Office Supplies
You will need a Log Book, pens, pencils, notepads, etc., for documenting your research findings. Try to keep the documentation clear and concise. This only makes our jobs easier in the long run.
First Aid Kit
You never know, you just may nee this. I've learned by experience, keep this close at hand. This is a must.
Night Vision Equipment
This is one useful item but still quite expensive for most novice researchers. Some entities are only visible on night vision equipment. Use your own discretion regarding this piece of equipment. I recently purchased night vision headset and love it. You really can see everything in the dark. Your average headset night vision equipment costs approximately $700.00 per unit. I will let the researcher determine if the item is direly needed.
